During a visit to a local health center, we identified a 1 year old child showing clear signs of severe malnutrition. At the time of assessment, the child had developmental milestones delays, was unable to crawl, speak, or grasp objects, indicating delayed physical, social and cognitive development. Concerned about his condition, the team decided to conduct a home visit to better understand his living situation and determine how best to support him.

For privacy reasons, we will refer to him as M.M

During the home visit, we found that John was living with his grandmother. His mother was unable to care for him due to a mental health condition (schizophrenia) and was currently experiencing a relapse while staying with other relatives.

It became clear that John was not only in need of urgent nutritional support but also required a safe and stable living environment for his overall well-being.

Given his situation, John was placed under the care of our children’s home, where he continues to stay to this day. He receives consistent nutritional support, which includes porridge flour, milk, and peanut butter.

Since receiving care, John’s condition has improved significantly. His weight has increased from 2 kg to 8 kg, and his general health and development have shown steady progress. This positive weight gain has made it possible for him to begin physiotherapy, aimed at supporting both his motor and cognitive development. He has also received health insurance and is up to date with his vaccinations.

M.M’s story demonstrates the impact of early intervention, proper nutrition, and safe caregiving. With timely support, a child who was once at risk of severe malnutrition is now on a path toward healthy growth and development.

However, many other children are still in similar or worse conditions, waiting for help.
